Developing a Passion

Andrew went to the New York Yankees game yesterday with our wonderful friend, Amber.  She is a die-hard fan of Derek Jeter and team.  Thanks to her passion for the Bronx Bombers, Andrew was all dressed up and ready to go.  It was a fabulous experience for him and an opportunity for real independence.  Plus, it was so much fun!

While Andrew likes baseball, he has never developed a real passion for it.  His passion is music, though, and he spends an extraordinary amount of time listening to it, researching past and present artists, finding cool videos and even going to concerts and shows.  Last weekend, his older cousin even told him about some cool software that will enable him to compose music on the computer.  And did I mention singing?  More passion than talent there, but it's still fabulous.  Passion is so important for everyone.

Having something in life that really interests you, that you really care about, and that you are truly committed to is so vital to a full and happy existence.  Plus, it usually helps us give something back to the world.  And people of all abilities need to learn, contribute and grow throughout life.  Don't we all?

I have no doubt Andrew learns more about music daily, and teaches us a thing or two, as well Now, if only those damn Yankees would win one!  Maybe they need to be more passionate about the game.

Struggling with Scoliosis

Andrew was diagnosed with scoliosis about two months ago.  Since then, we've had him fitted with a TLSO (brace), which he's supposed to wear whenever he's seated in his wheelchair (thankfully, not prescribed for sleeping).  Hoping to prolong the increasing curvature, but he hates it.  Specifically asked that he NOT have to wear it to the Yankees game (today) or to sleepaway camp (next month)  How mean of a mom can/should I be?

Many teens with CP struggle with this, and I'm wondering what we can do to help make it more manageable for him.  Trying to research online for suggestions.  Thoughts via blog are welcome.

Hoping to fend off back surgery for awhile, which also scares us.  Andrew knows this is important, but he's a typical teen and doesn't like the brace for all the right reasons. Plus, it's summer -- and getting hotter.

What's a mom to do?
