Celebrating CP Awareness Day

Today is Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day.  How did you celebrate?  For our family, it was pretty much "business as usual."  Dad went to work; kids, to school; Mom, to volunteer, grocery shop, carpool and now cook dinner.   Same old, same old.  That's pretty much what CP has become for us.  After living with the challenges of Andrew's disability for almost 13 years, we've done a pretty good job of finding our family rhythm around the condition.  We manage despite it and so does he.  Andrew received his hamstring botox injections a week ago and is tolerating the increased stretching and leg immobilizers like a champ.  We enjoyed a wonderful family vacation in February to Chicago, one of the nation's most accessible cities.  Andrew benefits from a very supportive and encouraging support system educationally, at home and in our community.  School, health and friendships are going well for everyone.  There's a lot to celebrate.

Unfortunately, more and more children are being diagnosed with cerebral palsy everyday.  For them, increasing awareness of the condition and funds to support research and advocacy is essential.  Please help if you can.

In a rare moment of televised bad taste,  President Barack Obama cracked a joke last night about Special Olympics.  This was covered broadly today by media everywhere; however, for families like mine, the real story is in the day-to-day ups and downs brought on by disabilities. How we adapt to these is really what life is all about.  How do we continue to advocate for our loved ones while still balancing the other important aspects of our families' lives?

Any advice is much-appreciated.

Motivating Me

Just saw this clip and I was moved.  Thought you might be too.  Take a minute and view it.  I was especially touched at the end when the young students so naturally hug this man and show true emotion (which I don't think is pity).  Finish strong.
